Legendary Josephine Baker Lives Again On South Beach

Josephine Baker will live again for one night on Feb. 1 as Marytrini, one of the South Beach's most fabled female impersonators, recreates one of the world's most legendary and unconventional performers.

The event at the World Erotic Art Museum celebrates Black History Month and pays homage to Baker. An icon of the 1920's, Baker danced at the Follies Bergere before becoming the "toast of Paris" as well as one of the most beloved equal rights activists of her time.  She racked up a number of American "firsts," including becoming the first black actress to star in a major motion picture, the first to integrate a concert hall, and the first to become a worldwide star.

Museum owner and Erotic Art Expert Naomi Wilzig, a longtime admirer, hosts a yearly tribute to the 1920's icon.

"She was a strong, powerful woman. She was a top performer, but she experienced a great amount of discrimination here. She also loved to perform in a sexy way, which is why we celebrate her here," said Wilzig.

South Beach entertainer and drag queen Adora will also be on hand at the event, and Wilzig's famous collection of Baker memorabilia, which includes paintings, posters, statues, press clippings and films, will be showcased. Along with Baker's most popular recordings, Baker's films, "Princess Tam Tam," and "Zou Zou," will also be shown continuously on a screen in the museum.

Baker enthusiasts look forward to the museum's tribute each year. Last year's Baker event was standing room only, as Wilzig hosted Jean-Claude Baker, Baker's adopted son and biographer.

The $15 admission fee includes the performances, a reception, and admission to the 12,500 square-foot museum, which contains 20 rooms filled with fine erotic art from prehistoric times to today.  The event begins at 7 p.m., and no one under 18 is admitted.
