Legendary actress Ruby Dee passes away

Legendary Actress Ruby Dee has died. CNN is reporting the widow of fellow acting great Ossie Davis died at her New York home on Wednesday at the age of 91. The Oscar-nominated star appeared in films with other Hollywood royalty. In addition to her husband and frequent collaborator who died in 2005 Dee’s co-stars included Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington.

She leaves behind a body of work from a pioneering career which began in the 1940s. “The Jackie Robinson Story”, A Raisin in the Sun, Do the Right Thing and "American Gangster” which netted her an Academy Award nomination at the age of 83 are among her films.

Dee’s small screen work inlcudes the televison movies “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, “ Their Eyes Were Watching God” and “Feast of All Saints” and the mini-series “Roots: The Next Genrations”, “The Atlanta Child Murders”, “Lincoln” and “The Stand”. She also provided the voice of “Alice The Great” for Bill Cosby’s “Little Bill” cartoon series and had guest starring roles on various television shows.

Dee was reportedly surrounded by her family at the time of her death.
