I am constantly amazed at all the wonderful educational opportunities we have at our disposal as Santa Clarita homeschoolers. These opportunities seem to be growing by the day and I just found out about a program at Legacy Christian Academy specifically for homeschoolers that is in its second year. The Legacy Beacon Program, where homeschoolers can sign up for one or more classes, or come all Friday from 8am-3pm is just one more way that you can help your child fulfill all his socialization needs.
The program is looking at expanding to 4th-6th grade in Fall 2012 if there is enough interest. Here is what is offered at the moment for K-3rd grade: Science Lab, Chapel, Spanish, Computer Lab, Lunch (just for the homeschoolers), Library, Music, Art and MIND Math.
During Science lab, students will do hands-on experiments and learn through discovery, and using the scientific method. The computer lab incorporates graphics, word processing, database and spreadsheet applications, while students will also be instructed in topics such as hardware, software, the internet, and website design and construction. In Art class students will learn about some of the renowned artists and be encouraged in their own artistic expression by allowing the students to be very creative in many different mediums. During Music each student has their own electronic keyboard and they learn to read music and music theory as well. MindMath is a revolutionary new program which engages students’ spatial-temporal reasoning abilities to explain and solve multi-step problems through exciting new computer games.
As I toured their facility I was impressed with their computer lab, library, music, and science rooms. One of the greatest features of the program is that each topic listed is taught by an expert teacher.
On top of all these great classes every Friday, homeschool students are also allowed to participate in the afterschool enrichment programs at Legacy, which include Chess, Cheerleading, Robotics, Cooking, Dance, and the like. Homeschool students are also invited to participate in some school activities like Thanksgiving Feast, Snow Day, Father/Daughter dances, Family Science Nights, and Family reading nights.
Some of you might wonder about the religious affiliation of the school and how it affects the classes and I asked the principal, Matt Jackson, homeschooled himself from K-12th grade, about just that. He expressed to me that while the school's Biblical worldview does impact all areas of study, students and families of all backgrounds are welcome and comfortable at the school. I have had several testimonies from families from all walks of life whose kids LOVE this program, with one family even sharing with me that their daughter wouldn’t even give up her day at Legacy to go to Disneyland!"
The price structure depends on the amount of classes that you decide to sign up for. If you signed up for all the classes on a Friday, you would be paying $85/month per student. If you only signed up for one class, it will be $20/month, 2 classes $37.50/month, 3 classes $52.50, 4 classes $65/month. There is an annual $100 registration fee and students are required to wear a uniform, which can most likely be obtained through the school’s uniform recycling program for around $30.
If you have any interest in joining this program, please contact Matt Jackson at 661.257.7377 or email him at jackson@legacy-christian.com. If you would be interested for the Fall for 4th -6th graders, please let him know about that now so he can plan on it. They still have 9-10 more spots open for the Spring semester that has just started for K-3rd graders, so feel free to give Matt a call if you are interested in possibly joining or observing/trying out the classes.
I was also discussing a potential Drama program for homeschoolers with him and if there is enough interest they may be able to have a drama program there starting in March for 8 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you have interest in that, please email me at elmariehyman@gmail.com.
