Leftover turkey is such a wonderful thing, and turkey BBQ is a delicious way to enjoy your leftovers. This yummy sandwich combines turkey with an amazing sauce – put it on a hamburger bun and you have a turkey sandwich that you will absolutely love! This is a simple, easy recipe that your family will request time and again -- leftover turkey doesn’t get any better than this! The sauce is sweet and tangy, and can be ready in a snap.
So many people love the white meat and ignore the dark meat when eating a turkey. This recipe is a way to enjoy both – it’s wonderful whether you are using dark, white or a combination of the two. Once you combine the turkey with this sauce, you won’t know the difference.
This is an amazing sandwich whether or not you put Swiss cheese (or another type of cheese) on it. The Swiss cheese melted on half of the toasted bun with the turkey BBQ on top adds another dimension to the sandwich. Thinly slices pickles added to the sandwich prior to serving are delicious, as well. The variations are endless.
Turkey Barbeque Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients for Turkey Barbeque Sandwiches (Yield: 4 sandwiches):
- 2 tablespoons onion, finely minced
- ½ tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. pepper
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ¾ cup ketchup
- ½ cup water
- 1 ½ cup cooked turkey, shredded or cubed
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (optional)
Directions for making Turkey Barbeque Sandwiches:
In a large pot, combine all ingredients, except for the turkey. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Add the turkey and cook for 5 minutes more or until the turkey is hot.
Place the hamburger buns open-faced on a baking sheet. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on one-half of each bun and toast in a 400 degree oven for 5 minutes.
Remove from the oven and ladle the turkey BBQ on the half of the bun without the cheese. Place the other half of the bun on top and serve.
