Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) is preparing to introduce a new version of the Emergency Unemployment Act that would extend funds to the 99ers -- those who have exhausted all available benefits -- an advocate for the unemployed said yesterday.
The American 99ers Union, an advocacy coalition, is collaborating with Lee on the proposed legislation.
Union Co-Founder Gregg Rosen said yesterday that the extension "will be paid for under The Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2008."
The bill would be retroactive. It would provide an additional fourteen weeks of benefits that would be added to the existing tier 1 extension, insuring that those who live in states that are not eligible for tier 4 would still be included, Rosen explained in an e-mail yesterday, adding that anyone who had previously been in the system -- those who had a claim number -- would not need to reapply.
Discussing the mechanics of how the funds would be distributed, Rosen compared this proposed extension to previous ones, saying that although unemployment insurance expired last year before Congress acted to reinstate it, there were no complications in distributing the funds once the legislation was reenacted. "It was a seamless transition," he said. As with the previous extension, the funds from this act would not be distributed in a lump sum payment, Rosen added.
In response to the question of whether payments would go to those who had returned to work at any point since exhausting benefits, Rosen said that would probably depend on each state's determination, as the funds would be dispersed at the state level.

we need it to. my husband has been laid off for 2 yeaars and no luck of a job. his uc ran out in november. we are struggling to pay utilities. can't afford hardly the basics for food. we are both 54 and that makes it even harder to get work. i want to thank washington for everything they have done to help us.well, there is not anything to thank them for. my apologies, i thought that was what they did,help the american people that has worked and paid their living all these years. i guess we were all wrong.

What these people are talking about..?If you want to see the reality just look around. Republicans were nervous and extended Bush's tax cuts for themselves and millionares because it's a money issue for themselves and their millionare's friends who don't want to pay higher taxes. Republicans give tax cuts to millionares who have millions in their bank accounts and live in homes priced at $20 millions and 10 cars in the parking lot. The timing of the reintroduction of this bill will be perfect! The new (real) unemployment numbers will be released by the department of labor statistics virtually simultaneously!! I have been out of work since Dec. 08. I am a heavy equipment operator with 25 years experience and have been submitting resumes by the dozens every week to no avail. I am a union worker and have been on the out of work list for two years. I have been submitting resumes to union and non-union companies in and out of state. If the union finds out I am looking for non-union work I could lose everything I have worked so hard for. I am a hard working man with a family to support. We NEED this tier 5 extension just to survive. We can not pay rent this month for the first time since this whole debacle started. We have been living by shoe strings since September and don't see any end in sight. If it wasn't for family loans we would have been homeless months ago.
Thank GOD for those unions helping thier workers.
Maybe you should join the 99ers union, they're doing a good job helping thier members too.
