Virginia Hospitality & Travel Association Education Foundation announced today that Lee DeMatteo of Spotsylvania Career & Technical Center is the Virginia 2014 ProStart Educator Excellence Award recipient. Chef DeMatteo will join other top educators in Chicago, IL. for the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s (NRAEF) ProStart Educator Excellence Awards from May 15-17, 2014.

“ProStart unites the industry and the classroom to create a unique and unparalleled experience for students. Our dedicated ProStart educators are working diligently to create that vital bridge for their students,” said Rebecca Reamer, VHTA Director of Education and ProStart. “Lee DeMatteo embodies all that make ProStart educators successful – inspiration, leadership, collaboration – and is very deserving of this honor.”

“After six years of implementation, I don’t take the credit for our successes; DeMatteo said”, “I give the credit to dedicated students, hard work, and the support of ProStart. My students are more confident in their abilities, as evidenced by their successes at local, regional, and national competitions over the past five years. Moreover, I try to utilize real-world scenarios and examples from my career in the culinary industry to expose students to the reality of life outside the classroom. This often motivates and challenges students to strive for greater things. The ProStart curriculum assists in realistically prepares them to enter the workforce. When they leave my program, I feel they are well prepared to enter the food service industry.”

ProStart is a nationwide, two-year program for high school students that develop the best and brightest talent into tomorrow’s industry leaders. From culinary techniques to management skills, ProStart’s industry-driven curriculum provides real-world educational opportunities and builds practical skills and a foundation that will last a lifetime.
