While the Nations capitol is still covered in snow, the start of cherry blossom season is just around the corner. The cherry blossoms are expected to bloom in early to mid April and the festival begins March 20th and runs through April 13th.
The annual cherry blossom festival is in honor of the 102 year old gift of cherry trees from Tokyo, Japan to Washington DC as a symbol of friendship. The festivities run for four consecutive weekends and host events such as fireworks, sake tasting, and even a kite festival.
Over 30 Washington DC hotels have packages for these festivities, some packages include metro passes, cherry blossoms products, and cocktails. More than 90 restaurants are participating in the Cherry Picks Restaurant Program and will be serving special spring menus throughout the festival weeks.
The United States has over 4,300 cherry blossom trees through out the country. Cherry blossoms can be found in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Newark New Jersey, Portsmouth New Hampshire, and San Diego California. In Japan Cherry Blossoms are extremely symbolic, in WWII cherry blossoms were used as motivation and have since then been used to inspire "Japanese spirit".
