January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. And as the tag line for the movement says, “Humans were never meant to hibernate.” All of the local resorts are open and the slopes are ready to greet you. That makes this a great time to take advantage of the deals to celebrate the occasion by learning to ski or snowboard.
Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is an effort to encourage adults and children to learn to ski (or snowboard) by taking lessons with professional instructors. It also encourages people who already do ski and snowboard to take lessons to improve their skills. The movement began in 2008 with a handful of ski resort associations and went nationwide in 2009. This year more than 300 resorts in 33 states are participating by offering special learning programs during the month of January.
One may ask why you should learn to ski or snowboard from a professional instructor. Professional instructors can aid you right from the beginning. They can help you find the appropriate gear for your ability and help you learn the proper way to use it. They provide you with knowledge and tips from years of experience and training. They will also teach you proper techniques that will make your learning and skiing or boarding experience more comfortable and in return more fun. Improper techniques can put extra stress on the body such as the knees. Lastly, they will help you learn the safe way to do things.
