Learn basic skills to keep expenses low

After writing about my frugal week, I began thinking about other things that have ultimately saved me money. Many people outsource basic skills when they could do it themselves. What kind of basic skills? Here's a short list.

  • Hand sewing, such as mending tears, shortening pants, and replacing buttons rather than using a tailor
  • Meal cooking, instead of eating out
  • Meal planning, which reduces the need to eat out
  • Handwashing clothes, instead of using a dry cleaner
  • Building and managing stock piles, instead of picking up snacks from a convenience store
  • Use the public library, instead of making one-use or limited-use purchases such as cake pans, books and magazines
  • Compost, and not buy from a garden store
  • Cutting and pasting paper to make your own greeting cards
