Learn about guinea pigs as exotic pets (videos)

Guinea pigs are quite common, even though they are considered exotic pets. It is often due to the fact more American pet owners select dogs and cats for pets, than they do guinea pigs that they seem to be exotic. However, many find that a guinea pig makes a great first pet for children. For those who own, care for and come to love guinea pigs, they often prove to be as wonderful a pet as any dog or cat.

Guinea pigs are native to South American and when handled properly, can become quite comfortable with their owners. Females prefer to be in pairs, while male guinea pigs opt for a solitary lifestyle. As guinea pigs are burrowing animals, they like to have a large living area with plenty of hiding space. Forget the hamster wheel, as these can be detrimental to the animal’s health and cause back or spinal injuries. Choose proper food specified for guinea pigs’ daily needs and requirements and ensure they get adequate Vitamin C.
