Learn about chinchillas as exotic pets (videos)

When it comes to choosing a pet not many people think of chinchillas. These exotic pets come from South America and are known for having a shy or cautious nature. They are cute animals that resemble rabbits; and it is their soft, plus fur that makes them attractive pets. Though they look like cuddly stuffed animals, most pet owners are disappointed to find they don’t tolerate handling well. For the perfectly matched pet owner; however, they can be a perfect choice. Chinchillas have a long lifespan and can live up to 15 years. Because they are high strung, and active by nation with a tendency to bite, they do not make a suitable pet for young children.

Children are invited to touch a chinchillas during the opening of the event 'Getting in touch with nature' in the new educational area at the Bioparco on October 12, 2013 in Rome, Italy.

Due to chinchillas' natural temperaments and disdain for handling, it’s important to purchase chinchillas from breeders rather than pet stores. Breeders often work with chinchillas from birth ensuring they are used to being handled and this reduces the amount of stress the animal feels. For those willing to take the time needed to ensure they have selected a well-socialized pet, and who are dedicated to providing the supplies, atmosphere and living arrangements suitable for chinchillas, this rodent can be a wonderful addition to your home.
