September is gearing up to be one of the biggest months of the year when it comes to smartphone releases, and now a leak of what appears to be one of the most anticipated devices of 2014 has just hit the web. Popular tech blog GSMArena posted images of what appears to be the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on Aug. 11.

When it comes to leaks such as this one it is always wise to keep a pinch of salt handy, but the images certainly seem to be the real deal. The alleged Note 4 seems to resemble the form factor of the yet to be released Samsung Galaxy Alpha, but the main difference between the Alpha and this phone is the very obvious SPen that is buried in the bottom corner of the device.

The images that have been leaked show that there are metal edges around the phone, and it seems as though Samsung have opted to re-use the popular faux leather back panel from the Note 3. The pictures also show that that there is a speaker on the bottom edge of the phone, and there seems to be the same arrangement of camera and heart rate sensor that has already been seen on the Galaxy S5 at the top of the device. While the metal surrounds are a nice touch, it is hardly the new form factor that one Samsung exec promised earlier this year.

Not much is known about the internal specifications of the new Galaxy Note 4, but many believe it could be one of the first devices to use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor. Other rumored specifications include 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel rear facing camera, 4K display, 32GB of internal storage, and a fingerprint sensor.

There is no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy Note series of phones has helped define the smartphone world, and while many other companies have tried to beat the Note line, most have failed in their attempts. When the Note was first launched many believed that such a large phone would never be popular, but thanks to the massive success of the Note and its large form-factor, companies such as LG, and Nokia have joined in on the phablet craze, and soon Apple are expected to release a phablet of their own too with the 5.5-inch version of the iPhone 6.

The new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be the star of the show at the upcoming Samsung Unpacked event that will be held simultaneously in New York, Berlin, and Beijing on Sept. 3. Many believe that the Note 4 will be revealed after Samsung asked the press to ‘Note the date’ of the conference. The date of the conference will also match the time-frame that Samsung has used to debut the Galaxy Note in the past.
