Close to 650 runners lined up for the start of the 2010 Leadville Trail 100 Run on Saturday, August 22, 2010.
Unfortunately, the only way to follow this race over the weekend was on Twitter. Unlike Western States, that has constant updates from every aid station and a live webcast, the Leadville 100 is a little more "old west" and a lot less tech friendly. Maybe it's a lack of cell service and internet access in the high mountain area.
Duncan Callahan of Gunnison, CO won the race in 17:43:24. Duncan also won in 2008 and was third last year.
“It was definitely one of my best races. There were about 40 miles when I didn’t feel 100%, but once I got into my rhythm, I felt good and strong. ” said Callahan, who races for Vasque, said after the race. “It also helps that I have the very best support group and crew.”
Callahan said he didn't hit his stride until the midway point, and began to feel stronger as the miles wore on. Callahan ran a brilliant race and earned a much deserved win.
Zeke Tiernan, 34, of Carbondale, CO was second in 18:25:30 and Dylan Bowman, 24, of Aspen, CO, was third in 18:36:15.
On the women's side Elizabeth Howard of San Antonio, TX gets the win in 21:19:47. She's coming off of a first place finish at the Rocky Raccoon 100 mile run back in February.
Stephanie Jones, 40, of Colorado Springs, CO was second in 22:35:05 and Ashley Arnold, 23, of Carbondale, CO was third in 23:08:16.
Pre-race favorite Anton Krupicka became hypoglycemic, hypothermic and dehydrated during the race. After leading for the first 75 miles, he could no longer continue by the time he hit the top of Sugarloaf and had to be ATV'd down for medical help at the May Queen aid station at mile 86.5. After receiving IV fluids and resting he made a full recovery.

I find it disappointing that you focused two paragraphs on a guy who has been unable to finish the race two years in a row than the rest of the guys who ran smart and completed the course. If the race had been 75 miles long, I could understand, but Duncan, as well as Zeke and Dylan, ran their race plans while keeping their egos in check for the full 100 miles. They deserve more than a mere mention.
You're absolutely right. I've been covering the TransRockies Run and haven't had time to update this story yet. I'm on it. Duncan, Zeke and Dylan were brilliant out there and deserve credit for running incredible races. Part of the reason I love ultra runners is that so many keep their egos in check, out on the course and off. It's a fantastic sport that I truly admire.
I just posted the update, with a quote from Duncan, and the times for Zeke, Dylan, Stephanie and Ashley. Sorry it took me so long. It's a busy week of trail racing. Congrats to Duncan and Elizabeth, and all of the runners who finished the 2010 Leadville 100.

Thank you J.L. I just read it and updated my report with a link to Anton's blog.
