Calling all spinach lovers, Popeye enthusiasts, Humanitarians, Social Media users and just plain ole good people in general: Can you please give us a helping hand? Allen, a national leading vegetable producer in canned and frozen veggies, is initiating a virtual food drive to benefit regional food banks nationwide and they are calling on each and every one of us to help. How can you help, you ask? It is so simple (and we are so glad you asked!): All you have to do is Like AllensVeggies on Facebook and a can of Popeye Spinach will be donated to a local food bank. How easy is that? You'd like to do more? Easy, simply post a link to the AllensVeggies Facebook page on your Facebook wall, asking all your friends to do the same, purchase more Allens Veggies or other canned goods and take to your own local food bank or volunteer your time to help feed those in need! Your help will be greatly appreciated, in whatever capacity it is offered.
While you are at it, buy yourself a few cans of Popeye Spinach, you won't believe how delicious it is and how many ways you can use it in your everyday cooking. Here are a few ideas on how to sneak that healthy green into some of your dishes:
Drain and add the chopped Popeye Spinach to:
- Soups (I add at least one drained can to all my soups and stews, no flavor, just nutrition)
- Stews (puree the spinach to thicken stew without flour)
- Dips (add a quarter cup to one cup of ranch dip for a delicious spinach dip)
- Sauces (spinach is wonderful in white sauce, flavor with fresh nutmeg)
- Salads (delicious added to chicken salad)
- Pastas (fantastic in lasagna sauce)
- Stuffings (use instead of basil to make pesto)
- Breads (add to any savory bread recipe)
- Smoothies (drain well and add to blender, best in berry smoothies)
Leading Vegetable Producer Creates Virtual Food Drive
Allens Donates One Can of Popeye Spinach for Every New Facebook Fan
Allens Inc., the parent brand of PopeyeSpinach and a national leader in canned and frozen vegetables since 1926, hosts the “I Yam What I Yam, Donate a Can” virtual food drive benefitting regional food banks nationwide.
Through the end of October, Allens Inc. will donate a can of Popeye spinach to a local food bank for every new fan at Facebook.com/AllensVeggies. Allens is creating this social media and cause campaign effort to strengthen local food banks that have been hit hard by growing demands for service and rekindle families’ love of Popeye and his spinach. Donating cans of spinach to food banks is a neighborly way Allens Inc. can help those in need. One click equals one can of spinach donated to families in need of nutrition. The community is encouraged to get as many people to participate as possible.
Allens will donate to The Food Bank for New York City, the North Texas Food Bank, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and the Community Kitchens of Birmingham. Popeye Spinach is a nutritious staple that has been passed down from generation to generation.
“Spinach makes Popeye strong and we want to give strength to the hungry,” said David Brown, Vice President of Retail Sales, Allens Inc. “We hope Facebook users come together for this effort and help many hungry families get the nutrition they need.”
