This week Leadership Long Beach hosted Government Day for Youth Leadership Long Beach at City Hall. The full day event is 1 of several programs designed by Leadership Long Beach to develop and mentor select sophomore and junior LBUSD students. The organization, led by Executive Director Jeff Williams, is actively accomplishing its mission of nurturing each students “personal leadership skills while introducing and exploring the most important political and social aspects of the Long Beach community”.
Government Day included some of the cities most distinguished guest speakers within the service and civic community including Vice Mayor Robert Garcia, City Council Representatives Al Austin, Rex Richardson and James Johnson, City Manager Pat West, and Commissioner Ameerah Alisande Massey, all of whom share an understanding of the importance of dedicating time to inspire and uplift future change-makers of the city.
Aside from the mentorship and lecture components, students were also able to apply what they have learned with a hands on approach of role play as civic leaders and community trustees poised to tackle ethical issues confronting “themselves, their peers, and their community”. With so many negative images of local teens it is more than refreshing to report the good works and collaborations of adults and teens to make a genuine difference for the city of Long Beach. It is imperative for local parents, educators, and teens to continue to play an active role in supporting these programs so that the much needed work excels and develops our future leaders for decades to come.
