The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in Chile are aiding in relief efforts. With a substantial number of 500,000 LDS members living in Chile, one member died during the quake, according to a KCSG Saturday report.

The Salt Lake City based LDS Church began to distribute food and water almost immediately after the massive earthquake struck Chile just one week ago. Since then LDS Church leaders have noted that food, water, tents, blankets, hygiene kits and sleeping mats are needed to help with relief efforts.

The LDS Church in Chile has already delivered six tons of food, and 20 additional tons are on its way to the city of Concepción.

Lynn Samsel, the LDS Director of Emergency Reponse said: “While any loss of life and destruction of great magnitude is a tragedy, we don’t anticipate that the situation in Chile will be nearly as devastating as what we’ve seen in Haiti.”
