Club America summed up another win with a 1-0 over Atlante FC at the Azteca Stadium to start off Saturday action in week 5 of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX. Miguel Layun, midfielder that two tournaments ago was receiving Tweets called “blame it on Layun” scored the lone goal of the game.
The match was not without controversy as the referee left the home-side with a man down in the 32nd minute. However, by that time America had already broken the net and taken the 1-0 lead. Atlante appeared as the dominant team, this coming from the fact that they had a numerical advantage. The blaugranas were not able to take advantage of the situation and could not claim badly needed points as they fight to stave off relegation.
Layun received a pass on the left wing and he took the ball across into the penalty area beating out three defenders in the process. He took his shot and found the right angle to beat out goalkeeper Eder Patiño.
Things turned south for the capitalinos when Argentine Rubens Sambueza received a red card in the 32nd minute. The striker had already received a yellow card for taking a dive. Upon challenging the referee. Antonio Perez did not hesitate and sent Sambueza off the pitch leaving the home team with an important piece off the field.
Atlante pressured, but could not get past the America defense. After 90 minutes of hard action, the game came to a close. America takes over the league table, but must wait to see what happens with Cruz Azul, the current leaders on the board.
For week 6, America will travel to Pachuca. Atlante returns home and will host Cruz Azul.
Toluca’s perfect season ends
Club Santos Laguna ended Toluca FC’s perfect season with a 2-0 win at the TSM Corona Stadium in Torreon, Mexico. The “Mexican hoops” won their first game of the season and handed Toluca their first loss. With America’s win, the eagles leap over the chorizeros and secure at least the second position on the league table with Cruz Azul yet to play.
Javier “Chuletita” Orozco was the hero of the match with a pair of goals in the 33rd and 35th minutes of action. Orozco is quickly becoming an important part of the comarca lagunera’s attack options.
Unfortunately for Santos, Coach Pedro Caixinha was sent-off for the third time since arriving in Mexico. He is quickly becoming one of the most temperamental coaches in La Liga MX.
