“National Sandwich Day” is celebrated every year on November 3 to commemorate the birth of the world’s first sandwich. It all started in the 18th century when an English noble named John Montagu was entertaining himself at a twenty-four hour gambling event. He didn’t want to be interrupted while he was betting to stop and eat a traditional meal. So he instructed his servants to place the meats between two slices of bread. This way he could eat his meal with one hand and continue betting with the other hand.
November 3 is also the birthday of John Montagu. Call it coincidence, many think not. Since he created the first sandwich to make his plans for the day easier he was then named the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Since then every third day of November has been celebrated as “National Sandwich Day”.
Sandwiches are one of the favorite food preparations of America. In fact, the hamburger is actually the most popular sandwich requested. The second most popular sandwich called for from menus is the chicken sandwich.
What is your favorite sandwich?
Some of the sandwiches that run neck-and-neck after that are the: BLT, grilled cheese, Reuben sandwich and the club sandwich. These deli sandwiches are still at the top of the popularity list today.
Layer up your favorites and celebrate “National Sandwich Day”!
