Potato chip giant Lay’s web site invites visitors to ‘Do us a flavor,’ by being among the first to try three new chip finalist flavors available as of Feb. 12.
According to an AP release on Feb. 8, the new flavors are Lay's Chicken & Waffles, Cheesy Garlic Bread and Sriracha, a hot sauce made from sun ripened chilies and used in Thai dishes.
Lay's is letting consumers decide which chip flavor will make the final cut. All three will be sold at retailers nationwide starting next week. After sampling all three, consumers will have until May to vote for the one that Lay's will carry.
What if all three perform well? Ann Mukherjee, chief marketing officer at Frito-Lay responded and said, "Who knows, we don't know what's going to happen." she said. "Our intent is to keep the one that people vote for."
The contest started with 3.8 million potential flavor submissions sent in to Lay's. A panel of chefs chose about 20 flavors to introduce to the public. Three were eventually picked.
Fans will be able to vote for their favorites. They can do it though Lay's Facebook page, by texting "VOTE" to 24477, or through Twitter using hashtags with the phrases SaveChickenWaffles, SaveGarlicBread or SaveSriracha.
It pays to be the person who came up with the winning flavor – Lay's will reward $1 million, or one percent of the chip's 2013 sales, whichever is more. The runners-up will win $50,000.
