A TSA agent and three other TSA agents were shot on Friday at Los Angeles International Airport, according to an NBC report on Friday. One of the agents died in the altercation. The shooting suspect has been identified as Paul Anthony Ciancia. The suspect is 23 years old and reportedly had a note with him that said he wanted to kill TSA agents and pigs. Ciancia was said to have been recently living in Los Angeles, but from New Jersey before moving there.
The deceased TSA agent is Gerardo Hernandez, 39. In the 12 year history of the TSA, he is the only agent who has ever been killed on the job.
The shooting occurred inside the Tom Bradley Terminal of the Los Angeles International Airport at the security checkpoint. A person approached a document checker at approximately 9:20 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, pulled out a semi-automatic rifle, and fired a shot at the security officer. After shooting the TSA agents, the gunman continued to fire rounds inside the terminal. One report says that the gunman has been taken into custody.
The victims were taken to UCLA Medical Center where one is in critical condition and two others are in fair condition.
After the shooting the airport was evacuated, street closures were put in place, and incoming flights were given a ground-stop order.
Authorities checked through the terminal to see that there are no other gunmen present in the airport. It was then determined that the gunman acted alone.
President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation later in the day.
