According to Merriam-Webster, fraud is "the crime of using dishonest methods to take something valuable from another person."

A fraudster is "a person who pretends to be what he or she is not in order to trick people."

Fraud can occur on the Internet as with the case of identity theft and phishing scams. It can also take place in recruiting scams, such as when recruiters request upfront fees for jobs. Consumers should be vigilant of perpetrators of scams.
