In a game that featured two teams with two completely opposite offensive philosophies the Lawrence Golden Tornado’s concluded the 2013 regular season defeating the Bethpage Golden Eagles 42-14 at Bethpage High School, securing the number 2 seed in the Nassau County Conference 3 playoffs and a first round date with Sewanhaka.
In a clash that featured the high scoring, aerial attack of the Tornado’s and the punch you in the mouth, grind it out style of the Eagles it was the Eagles that landed the first blow, forcing a fumble on the opening kick-off and scoring on their first play from scrimmage when Christian Ferruzza hit Michael Sforza on a 20-yard play action pass, for an early 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Lawrence quickly moved the ball inside the Bethpage 5, highlighted by a 46-yard run by Jordan Fredericks. However, the drive stalled on a 20-yard block in the back penalty and a 3rd down interception by Nick Marino.
Lawrence would get the ball back on a fumble at the Bethpage 21 on the very next play but turned the ball back over on downs after a 3-yard run followed by three straight incompletions.
The next three possessions resulted in punts until Lawrence finally found pay dirt when Fredericks scampered 31 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7.
After the Eagles third of five consecutive punts Lawrence found the end zone again as they went 51 yards in just three plays that included a 37-yard completion to Elijah Jones and an 8-yard touchdown scoring run by quarterback Joe Capobianco.
Lawrence extended the lead to 21-7 just before half driving 64 yards on 9 plays that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Fredericks.
Lawrence wasted very little time getting back on the board in the second half as a Bethpage fumble on the opening play was followed by a 40-yard run by Fredericks and a 2 yard touchdown run by Simon Jones to give Lawrence a 28-7 lead.
Bethpage would cut the lead to 28-14 as they put together a methodical 13-play 71- yard drive that ended on a 2-yard touchdown run by Anthony Herman.
Needing a stop to turn the momentum back into their favor, Bethpage got just that as they forced Lawrence to turn the ball over on downs when a semi fake punt attempt was stopped at the Lawrence 37. Capobianco, who is both the quarterback and punter seemed ready to punt the ball facing a 4th and 4 from the Lawrence 37, but instead attempted to throw a first down pass that was blocked at the line of scrimmage. The euphoria of the stop lasted less then a minute, as Lawrence flushed Ferruzza from the pocket, hitting him as he threw, causing an errant pass and interception that was returned to the Bethpage 42.
Lawrence would put the game out of reach as they drove 42 yards on 9 plays that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Sam Locascio. Lawrence concluded the scoring on an 82-yard screen pass to Jordan Fredericks that included a bone-crushing block downfield from Locascio, allowing Fredericks to go untouched the final 20-yards.
With the second season set to begin, both teams will look to punch their ticket to Hofsftra University for the semi finals of the conference 3 playoffs. If both can defend their home turf next week, they will do just that.
