Q & A with Lawren Leo, author of Dragonflame: Tap into Your Reservoir of Power Using Talismans, Manifestation, and Visualization (Pompton Plains, NJ: New Page Books, 2014).
What was your inspiration for this book?
Spirit. What I mean by Spirit is personal illumination, epiphany. The idea came to me in a lucid dream. I actually saw the Dragonflame talisman and concept in my mind's eye and knew what it meant: goal, purpose, and sacrifice.
So are you saying you manifested the book with the Dragonflame process?
Yes. Through trial and error and a lot of meditation the book wrote itself through the Dragonflame philosophy.
What is the philosophy of Dragonflame?
It's a two-fold process. By manifesting your desires the metaphorical Philosopher's Stone is slowly revealed. The Dragonflame philosophy describes how to work with life's challenges and to utilize them as opportunities for spiritual growth; ergo, the alchemical process of transmuting base metal into gold.
Would you say your skills in divination and magic have been further developed through the use of Dragonflame?
Most certainly. There is a very powerful and potentially life-altering ritual found in Dragonflame – the ‘Moon Rite’ – that I use at least once a year. It helps to keep the mind's eye open. But the readers can find that out for themselves.
Would you say that you discovered your purpose in life through Dragonflame? Or, is Dragonflame your purpose in life?
I was searching for purpose just prior to discovering Dragonflame. After meeting Dragonflame (I think of Dragonflame as a spirit companion and a living entity), I knew that writing and sharing its existence with others was my purpose.
Is Dragonflame a religion or supplement to any religion?
Dragonflame is not a set of rules that needs to be followed. Rather, it is a set of rules that needs to be studied. It is a personal philosophy with a set of malleable guidelines. It can, however, be used as a supplement.
Is this your first book? What else have you written?
It is my first book. But I have also written several meditations and articles that can be found in my electronic magazine, The Familiar. More recently, a collection of my short stories has been published as eBook Downloads. They can also be found on my website: NewMoonBooks.org.
How would you describe your writing style?
Because I am constantly in the process of re-inventing myself, my writing style changes often. I would describe it as scandalous, bold, truthful, and inspiring. My short stories were born from love, tragedy, and magical experiences. Dragonflame, on the other hand, is based solely on magic. It’s about overcoming life's difficulties and experiencing personal empowerment. Over the years, I have noticed that people's emotional structures have become more complex. This may be for many reasons, but mostly from advances in technology. Whatever the case, I choose to respect this phenomenon and change my writing style accordingly. All in all, I like to challenge my readers.
What's your next writing project?
I’m working on a new short story. It deals with past lives, music, love, and freedom.
Having had such a varied life, do you feel good about where you are now? And, what is your goal for the future?
My life experiences have ranged from challenging to charmed, but all of them have created who I am now and have enhanced my ability to help others. As for my future goals, I'm learning to live in the moment. I'll get back to you on that one!
What qualifies you to write a book on spirituality or magic?
What qualifies anyone to write a book on such a profound topic? I believe the only answer is experience and the desire to share it with others.
