The Sermon on the Mount by Carl Heinrich Bloch, clipart.christiansunite.com
As Jesus taught the sermon on the mount, he boldly stated the law will be fulfilled.
19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.... (Matt 5:19 NKJ).
The ten commandments as given to Moses on Mt. Sinai remain the Judeo-Christian foundation for law, morality, and ethics. Let's take a brief look a these Jesus upheld (Exodus 20:1-17 NKJ).
v1 And God spoke all these words, saying:
v2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
v3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
v4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth....”
10 “There shall not be found among you (Moses defined) anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD....” (Deut. 18:10-12 NKJ).
v7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
v8 “ Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God.... Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.”
The initial commandments defined relationship with God; the remaining commandments are more behavioral in nature.
v12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
v13 “You shall not murder.”
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, (Jesus defined) ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment” (Matt 5:21-22 NKJ).
v14 “You shall not commit adultery.
27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, (Jesus again explained) ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matt 5:27-28 NKJ).
v15 “You shall not steal.
v16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
v17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
So from reading this, you might question, is there any hope when all men are guilty of sin?
Yes! because there is one amazing fact even Christians widely confuse. Christianity is not a religion! True Christianity is a relationship by repentance and belief with the one who proved he was the Son of God.
