Law enforcement sources confirm that suspect in shoot out is Christopher Dorner

In a stunning developement in the Christopher Dorner case police officers near the mountain town of Big Bear, California are reported to have exchanged gunfire with a lone gunman who had taken hostages. The gunman, who fled the scene in a stolen car is confirmed by a police source speaking to the Associated Press and reported by the Huffington Post to be former LAPD officer Dorner, currently wanted for three slayings.

The officer's name has been held back by his request because he is not an authorized spokesperson.

Sounds of the gun battle were recorded by a KCAL-Televison reporter.

Dorner had held two hostages prisoner for several days while authorities searched the very area in which he was hiding. One hostage was able to escape and apparently made a cell phone call alerting police.

Dorner is believed to be fleeing on Route 38 and road blocks have been established along that route. Dorner is believed to be well armed.

A CNN affiliate reports two police officers may have been injured, the extent of those injuries are not known at this time.
