The performance troupe known as LAVA has been creating original acrobatic and theatrical productions for over 10 years. The all-women troupe combines dance, acrobatics, human physicality, and social commentary to produce innovative performances. Starting June 2nd, the company will perform at The Flea Theater in Tribeca with their all new production Encyclopedia.
Founder and artistic director Sarah East Johnson informed me that LAVA began in 2000 as a dance company, but has since evolved into something much greater. The company not only produces dance/acrobatic performances, but also teaches movement and aerial classes and runs social outreach programs. Located in Brooklyn, NY, the LAVA studio seeks to create a new movement language with their unique dance/acrobatic style of performance.
The show Encyclopedia utilizes this special movement language to convey a number of different ideas. Encyclopedia is comprised of eight different performance pieces which, Johnson says, each have a separate feel, direction, and concept. However, much like an Encyclopedia, these very different elements come together to provide the audience with a more complete sense of understanding.
LAVA has been awarded with an OBIE and a Bessie award for their work, and has been described as beautiful and uplifting by its audiences. Don't miss your opportunity to see this thought-provoking performance and get your tickets now for Encyclopedia.
Performances of Encyclopedia will run at The Flea Theater in Tribeca, NY from June 2-12. Tickets can be purchased online at the Flea Theater website. For more information about LAVA, its programs, or the show Encyclopedia, head to the LAVA website.
