In a third grade Math class, the students use workbooks and photocopies for their class work
and for their homework.
In addition to the millions spent on consumable workbooks and on photocopies there is considerable time involved in making the copies.
The workbooks and the photocopied sheets do not provide enough practice to master the Math skills.
I always used textbooks for Math. The students used a piece of blank paper folded it into 16 squares to fit 32 problems using both sides of the paper.
I also used lined paper with textbooks, charts, and transparencies for Language Arts skills.
LAUSD teachers have not had a raise in 7 years; support personnel have been terminated; and class sizes have increased while wasteful millions go to publishers.
Will the waste ever cease?
