And it’s coming your way!
The shot heard around the country was fired on Thursday, January 10, 2013 by the teachers at Garfield High School in Seattle, Washington.
“The entire teaching faculty at Garfield High School (with only three abstentions) voted to support a boycott against administering the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) this week or ever again.”
“On Friday, teachers at Ballard High School said they would join the boycott as well.”
One teacher said, “Our students are more than a test score.” From another, “I see no use for it at all, so I’m not going to do it.”
For so long, many of us have been writing that testing is not teaching, and that our children are the losers. Finally, the war against testing has entered a new phase.
Teachers everywhere should be cheering and planning to organize boycotts. Parents everywhere should be clapping, planning to support the teachers, and opting out of testing.
Test publishers making their millions every year from our tax dollars purchasing the tests and the test preparation materials better be preparing to tell their shareholders about a future loss of revenue.
Students everywhere should be preparing themselves for a true, well rounded public school education like our generation had.
The revolution has begun--first the tests, then the school board, superintendent, and downtown administrators.
A change is gonna come.
