Lauryn Hill has been released from prison, according to an Oct. 4 TMZ report. The ex-Fugees star was released early Friday morning from the Federal Correctional Institution in Connecticut, after serving three months for tax evasion.
Hill’s incarceration stemmed from her failure to pay taxes on over $1 million in income earned between 2005 and 2007. She was incarcerated on July 8, and at that time took on a new title, Inmate #64600-050.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hill spent the last three months in the Danbury, Conn., minimum security prison, where inmates work jobs ranging from landscaping to food services and live in dormitory-style rooms. The songstress may be out of jail, but this is not the end of her punishment. The Associated Press reports that Hill will stay under parole supervision for a year, and will spend the next three months under home confinement.
All publicity is good publicity when one is a celebrity. On Thursday, Hill released a new song titled “Consumerism.” Entertainment Weekly reports that the new track was released on the singer's tumblr account, and that the song was recorded prior to her going to prison. “We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side,” Hill noted via tumblr.
Hill’s prison is famous for more than just housing the celebrity. It is the inspiration for the hit show, “Orange Is the New Black.”
