Laurent Fignon, the Frenchman who the Tour de France in 1983 and 1984 and who remains an iconic figure in international cycling as a television commentator, continues to struggle in his battle with cancer.
Hedwig Kroner of CyclingNews.com has just posted a succinct and revealing interview with Fignon.
Fignon was followed by compatriot Bernard Hinault (1985), giving the host nation three straight Tour de France winners. But a French cyclist hasn't won the sport's biggest event since.
Fignon, who since his retirement has worked as a race owner and organizer in addition to his journalistic pursuits, also finished second to Greg LeMond is the well-documented, dramatic final time trial in Paris in 1989.
"I am not dead, but I am not healing, either," Fignon, 49, said in the CyclingNews.com interview. "Today, I'm okay, but yesterday I was really tired."
