The world is still mourning of the death of Robin Williams, but another great actor has died. Lauren Bacall, a movie star legend, died at the age of 89. She was one of the best. She was sexy and a beauty and married to another film star legend, Humphrey Bogart.
Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske. She was a 19 year old model who got her picture on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1944. The sultry Lauren Bacall made her debut we could say in the movie “To Have and Have Not” which was adapted from Ernest Hemingway’s famous book.
From this movie we get the immortal words, "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."
Though Humphrey Bogart who played along side her was 25 years older than she was the sparks exploded when the two of them got together. Bogart was married at the time but as soon as his divorce was final he married Lauren Bacall on May 21, 1945.
The their marriage was quite novel for Hollywood where the actors married and divorced shortly afterwards; their love was intense and real. But as luck would have it only 10 years after their marriage, tragedy struck when Humphrey Bogart developed cancer of the esophagus and passed away. Lauren Bacall was there for him nursing him to the very end. She was completely devastated the love of her life was gone.
Lauren Bacall was not perfect she had an affair with Frank Sinatra after that and then she married Jason Robards and had her third child Sam Robards.
Lauren Bacall left Hollywood in the 1950s and changed her career career by singing in Broadway musicals. She went back to Hollywood and played an elderly widow alongside John Wayne in the Shootist (1976).
She was named one of Hollywood’s most beautiful in 1976. She also played alongside Barbra Streisand as her mother in “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” Lauren Bacall received a Life Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. It was long overdue.
Lauren Bacall was one of the greatest ladies in Hollywood. She was unique in her own way. She never understood why people said she was beautiful and thus she was not daunted by Hollywood glitz and glamor. She was just a girl who had an amazing talent; the ability to act.
