On June 12 Wetpaint Entertainment revealed the news that actress Laura Prepon will be returning to the third season of the Netflix original series "Orange is the New Black" as a series regular. Prepon was a series regular for season one, but had a limited role in the recently released season two. The third season of the series will premiere in the summer of 2015.
Prepon plays the role of Alex Vause, a woman with long, dark hair and glasses, who has a relationship with Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) while she is an international drug smuggler. The first season followed Piper as she tried to find out if Alex turned her in after discovering both of them are in the same women's prison in Connecticut. The pair end up rekindling their relationship briefly, causing Piper to break her engagement to Larry (Jason Biggs).
The second season showed the pair being called for trial in Chicago, and Alex managed to get a better deal than Piper. Piper doesn't do the right thing and ends up having to serve out the rest of her sentence at Litchfield, while Alex tells the truth and gets a price on her head. The third season of the series was green lit before the second season aired, and it's likely the series will run for a few more seasons, even though Piper has already served half of her sentence on the show.
Rumors swirled last summer that Prepon was leaving the series, which her rep corrected by saying the actress would only be appearing a few episodes. She was expected to return to wrap up her character's story line, which will also bring her back to appear in all thirteen episodes in season three. Fans can look forward to her relationship with Piper getting even more complex and the pair continue to serve their sentences together.
International Business Times revealed on June 11 that production on the third season of the series is already underway. Prepon even tweeted photos from meetings, including a list of potential season three episode titles. Her character Alex will be returning to Litchfield, thanks to Piper's meddling to make sure Alex doesn't get into trouble in Queens.
Actress Mary Steenburgen will be joining the cast for the third season as well, which she revealed through her official Twitter account. It's unclear whether Steenburgen will play an inmate or a role outside of the prison, but she is expected to appear in many episodes of season three. Most of the principal cast will be returning for the new season, which will see Alex and Piper reunited and uncover the backstories of several other inmates.
Actress Dascha Polanco, who plays innate Dayanara Diaz, will also be a series regular for season three. She appeared in all thirteen episodes of seasons one and two, but was never credited as a main cast member. The new season has already begun production, and will begin filming soon. Season three is expected to air on Netflix in June 2015 and will have at least one more season.
