The annual celebration of love is closing in on us. It is a time that is filled with hearts, and candy and "be mines." Or "I will heart you with candy if you will be mine's." With historical roots firmly attached to the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia which was intended to secure fertility, I understand why the celebration of love has been narrowed down to focus primary on romantically involved couples. However, like any other holiday that is best celebrated surrounded by those you love it can be a time of sadness for the many whose arms are empty. Or whose hearts are missing, or never had, their one true love.
Like elementary school students and the populace of 18th century Europe, I have always subscribed to the belief that Valentine's Day should not only be celebrated by couples, or those wishing to becoming couples, but cards, flowers, candy, or any gift of your choosing (maybe it is a simple never before spoken "I love you"), should be given to any person whose presence fills your life with sunshine.
Are you looking for a special way to say "I love you? One of the best ways is to say it in a way that will fill a heart with laughter. Lucky for you The NC Comedy Arts Festival Improv week starts Feb.14th. Laughter, it has been said, is like music to the soul.
If your intent is not to set the mood with laughter but a great love story than one of the greatest ever written is getting a special showing at the Varsity Theatre in Chapel Hill. With iconic lines like "I don't know nothin 'bout birthin no babies" and "frankly my dear I don't give a dam," Gone With the Wind is a classic, maybe even cautionary, tale. Be forewarned you will spend from 1:00 pm - 7:30 pm at the theater, but the cost of the ticket includes popcorn and fountain drinks that are refillable throughout the duration of the movie. And a small buffet will be served at intermission.
Maybe you are now thinking that you are not the type to attend a comedy show, or sit through a long love story set during the civil war. Maybe you feel like telling that someone special that you love them with a day of pampering. (Note: Day of pampering is on my list of favorite ways to make me feel loved.) One of the best places in the Triangle to get pampered in an atmosphere of elegance and tranquility is the Umstead Spa in Cary.
So there you have it: laughter, movies, & pampering. However you spend Valentine's day, say I love you to everybody that you love. Say it as often as you can -- as loud as you can -- in as many ways as you can.
Happy Valentine's Day!
