I have been a fan of comedy for years.Most of it really good and some of the really bad comedy made me laugh also. I am thinking that could be either I was embarrassed that everyone around me was laughing and I didn't think it was that funny or maybe I just felt uncomfortable because somewhere deep down in my psyche I was sort of offended and I just laughed to keep from getting annoyed. Either way comedy has been something I have enjoyed for years. I remember laughing at the comics on the Ed Sullivan show along with my parents, mainly because they laughed I am sure, I really doubt at that age I had any idea who any of those folks were, except of course for Topo Geegio. But looking at some of the old footage now, I can see why people laughed. Ed had Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby,Phyllis Diller and the list goes on and on the "legends" that performed on the "Talk Of The Town" stage. Literally a who's who of anyone who has ever been or wanted to be a comic looked up to was on that show.Thanks Ed.
My first comedy record was Bill Cosby Is a Very Funny Fellow, Right? My second comedy record was Bill Cosby Wonderfulness. I played Superman, Tonsils, Noah(all parts),and every other track of those records so many times, you can barely make them out at all now. I then progressed to George Carlin and it all swerved from there.He was and will forever be my favorite comedian. I have started to replace the records with CDs, since as was the case with the Bill Cosby records, they are just getting harder and harder to listen to. I was very blessed to see George Carlin live more than once and it is an experience I still talk about and will never forget. And both times it was just as he was preparing for his big cable special he did every year. Miss him. Over the years I have heard some great comics. Sam Kinison,Bill Hicks, Ron White,Richard Pryor(who by the way I wore out the cassettes I had of his albums),Chris Rock, Dice(before he became annoying and a caricature of himself) and many more. There are many more young, up and coming comics that are out there no one will get to see and hear because either the venues that catered to that are gone or venues just dont want to take a chance on comedy night due to financial issues. And that is sad on all levels. That is why I am really excited and cant wait to tell you about something relatively new.
About a year ago, a very energetic and eager couple, Joe Deez and Gina Chiappazzi decided to revive the comedy scene in Lima Ohio. Lima, is of course the hometown of comedy legend Phyllis Diller, so there is some history of laughs in Lima Ohio. They have held comedy nights,open mic nights,they are taping for a potential television show in the future and so much more. Short of running naked with a sandwich board down Main Street, they have done everything to get noticed. They deserve support. They deserve our support, They deserve the support of everyone who sits around and says there is nothing to do. There is something to do. Laugh...laugh until you have to wet yourself(don't worry every venue has a restroom)and come back and laugh some more.
