Latisse: Your Questions Answered

Latisse has been getting lots of exposure on TV lately. It seems that every time a program goes to commercial, there's an ad with Brooke Shields telling you how Latisse can give you thicker and darker eyelashes. It's a great idea, but there seems to be apprehension about using a prescription drug cosmetically. Also, patients are turned off by a long list of side-effects rattled of so quickly. But, fear not, for your concerns about Latisse will be finally addressed here.

What exactly is Latisse? Latisse is also known as Lumigan, which is classified as a prostaglandin, and is primarily used to treat glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve where in poor fluid drainage and increased pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve. Lumigan reacts with blood vessels in the eye to cause better fluid drainage and decrease eye pressure. Now, will using Latisse cause your eyes to have abnormally low pressure? No, because even though Latisse and Lumigan are the same concentration of 0.03%, studies have shown that application of Latisse causes minimal pressure changes.

How does Latisse work? It was found that Lumigan causes a side effect to occur in the eyelash follicle. It increases the length of the growth cycle, as well as the number of follicles. This is how Latisse causes longer and thicker lashes. Now, other side effects have been noted in Lumigan, such as eye color and skin darkening, but again, these side effects are minimized in Latisse. This is mainly due to the application. While Lumigan is dropped directly into the eye, Latisse is applied to the upper eyelid via brush, thus making application easy and safe.
