The annual Oscar Awards is a few hours away. In its 85th year, Seth MacFarlane will host the outstanding film achievements live from Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif. from 8:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m. ET. But before the award events, the red carpet extravaganza will premiere and both will be televised live on ABC includng 225 countries worldwide.
The Latins will be hoping for a win this year of the five nominations. Among the 2013 Academy Awards nominations, the Latins in the running for the 85th Oscar Awards are Claudio Miranda who is nominated in the Cinematography category for "Life of Pi". Mr. Miranda of Santiago, Chile has been nominated twice for an Oscar. His first was in 2009 for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
The second Latin to obtain a nomination is Spaniard Paco Delgado for Costume Design for the musical "Les Miserables". The first Spaniard who was nominated for an Oscar and won was Antonio Cánovas in 1971.
Another Latin is Mexican José Antonio García along with his teammates John Reitz and Gregg Rudloff, has been nominated for an Oscar in the Sound Mixing category for his work on "Argo". García is currently working on the final mix of "Iron Man 3" scheduled to open in late April.
Another nomination for Chile this year is in the Foreign Language Film category for the movie "No". "No" is directed by Pablo Larraín and with the stellar performance of the Mexican Gael García Bernal. It is based on the play "El Plebiscito", written by Antonio Skármeta about voting in 1988 to see if Augusto Pinochet would continue or not with his dictatorship.
"No" competes against "Amour" from Austria, "Kon-Tiki" from Norway, "A Royal Affair" from Denmark and "War Witch" from Canada.
Nominated in the Documentary Short category is the Latin film "Inocente" of Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine. A story of a 15 year old homeless and undocumented girl whose name is Inocente (Innocent) who uses her beautiful work of art to forget her daily difficult life. It is a movie which speaks of millions of youth in the United States living similar situations. The film’s intention is to span national awareness of youth in the streets that have much more to offer and have dreams to fulfill.
