May 20, 2011 – El Floridita, which namesake is the restaurant in Habana that our beloved Hemingway loved to patron, is a Cuban restaurant in Hollywood that is a faithful representative of the food, music, and culture of the island.
With a comprehensive menu of Cuban food, a full bar, and a roster of entertainment that goes from Monday through Saturday weekly, El Floridita has become one of the most stable venues for Latin entertainment in the city of Los Angeles. Its schedule’s latest addition, Latin Jazz with Oskar Cartaya and his Enclave on Thursday nights, is only on his second week and it is already a hit.
The thing with El Floridita is that, because of its longevity, one never knows who may just show up on any given night. Last night, for example, after a day leading a clinic at West L.A. Music, the famous Puerto Rican percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, who has performed with the likes of Eddie Palmieri, Dizzy Gillespie, and even the rock band Phish, joined Cartaya and his group to thrill not only the musicians but also the crowd, which even stopped their dancing to watch him do what he does best.
Hidalgo performed just one song, conveniently, for yours truly, right around midnight. His musical prowess, however, not to take away from the rest of the musicians in Cartaya’s Enclave – seasoned and passionate artists who love what they do and is proven in every note they play.
Check them out any Thursday at El Floridita, located at 1253 N. Vine St., in Hollywood. Valet parking is available. For information visit http://www.elfloridita.com
