It was just a few years ago that it was difficult to find a Thai restaurant in the Capital Region. Now, they seem to be opening at about the same pace Chinese and pizza places fold, the latter usually as a result of market saturation.

The latest is BKK Bistro, which opened today at 728 New Loudon Road (Route 9) in Latham, Albany County. That venue that was home to the Mastracci family's Fabio's Italian Restaurant & Bar until it closed last August.

Fabio Mastracci, who ran his namesake restaurant with his parents, opened Mammone's Italian Deli last September. It is located in the Rosewood Plaza at 501 New Karner Road in Colonie. The Mastracci family's involvement in the Capital Region restaurant field includes a 16-year run at Mama Maria Cucina in Clifton Park. It closed in 2000.

BKK Bistro bills itself as "Thai fusion and martinis," the most popular descriptor for Thai spots in the area. It also notes is will function as a nightclub as well. Hours: 4:30 to 10 p.m. today through next Thursday. Beginning that Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Phone: (518) 783-7999. Currently, BKK's website and Facebook page contain virtually no information other than hours and phone number.
