The latest U.S. Drought Monitor was released Thursday and shows some improvement in the drought over northern Illinois, due in part to the rains the area received Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. While there was improvement in the drought locally, especially to Rockford’s east, area’s downstate and to the west worsened. The latest statistics show a reduction in the percent area in the D0 (Abnormally Dry), but increases in the D1 (Moderate) and the D2 (Severe) areas. Due to the wet start to the year most of Northern Illinois has still seen up to 150% there average rainfall to date, despite receiving less than 75% the average rainfall the last 30 days. If more widespread, consistent rains are not received soon, area soils will continue to dry.
The pattern of above normal temperatures and below average rainfall looks to continue to be locked in place through at least the middle of next week. In the short term, temperatures will be right around the average high for the date Thursday, but Friday and Saturday look to very warm and humid. A Front will push through the region later Saturday giving us a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday. As the front sags to our south, temperatures will pull back to around 80 for Sunday, before they push to the upper 80s for Monday, and near 90 Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week.
As far as rainfall goes, only scattered/slight chances of rain exist over the next seven days. The first chance being Saturday night and into early Sunday, another chance Monday afternoon, and another chance on Wednesday as another front approaches.
