11 Alive News - commissioned Survey USA poll found that about half of Georgia residents support using state tax funds to build a new retractable-roof stadium for the Atlanta Falcons football team.
The poll, released today and conducted on Wednesday, surveyed 500 adults in the Peach State and has a +/- 4.5 percent margin of error.
To the first question, that simply asked if the responded supported using hotel-motel tax dollars to pay for a portion of the new stadium, 47 percent of Georgians responded “no” and 43 percent said “yes;” 10 percent were undecided.
The second question asked if using the motel-hotel tax dollars is the only way to keep Falcons in Atlanta, would the responded supported, 37 percent still opposed it, while 54 percent supported it. Nine percent were unsure.
The Georgia General Assembly will decide if the project should go forward. The Falcons stadium project is one of the biggest issues on the agenda for the 2013 session that just started two weeks ago.
The cost of the new stadium would be around $1 billion and $300 million would come from the hotel-motel tax money. The city of Atlanta would pay for infrastructure around the stadium but Falcons would pick up the rest of the costs.
The new venue would bring the state an annual rent fee paid by the team, while the Falcons would keep all concession revenue from any event hosted at the stadium.
