As U.S. health officials announce that the H1N1 vaccine is 'safe', many people continue to be concerned over the safety of the H1N1 vaccine, particularly pregnant women. This week, Canada recalled one batch of H1N1 vaccines, due to number of allergic reactions; in addition, there have been reports that the H1N1 virus is resisting drugs and mutating.
Common side effects of the H1N1 vaccine
Most side effects of the H1N1 vaccine are considered mild and will last between one and two days; these include:
- swelling or redness at the injection site
- headache
- muscle ache
- nausea
- fever
- fainting (occasionally in teenagers).
Severe side effects of the H1N1 vaccine
More severe side effects from the H1N1 vaccine should be treated by a doctor immediately; severe side effects include;
- swelling around lips or eyes
- difficulty breathing
- hives
- wheezing
- dizziness
- high heart beat
- paleness.
Side effects of the H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women
The side effects of the H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women are considered the same as everyone else; however, there has been some concern over reported miscarriages in women after having the H1N1 vaccine, in addition to concerns over the effects of the thirmerosal ingredient in the H1N1 vaccine.
