After fifty years of lolling around the same old pond, Charlie, an over-mature bull gator, has been temporarily relocated.
Charleston Air Force base and the Navy Base, in the military’s realignment effort, have become one. And with that there are some reconstruction projects to be done. One such project is in very close proximity to where Charlie calls home.
In order to avoid any unpleasantness with the construction workers it was decided that Charlie needed to leave his “swamp” for the time being.
While he is “vacationing” in an undisclosed location, Charlie’s quarters will be enlarged. The old retention pond that he has called home for a lifetime will be spruced up, dredged out and readied for his homecoming in a couple of months.
There were no reported sightings of “girlfriends” that might have needed relocation, as well.
Charlie, a 12 foot alligator, is the unofficial mascot for the base. Sorry Charlie, it had to be done!

12 feet long - holy cow!!!
OK. So where is Charlie now? I just read that it is illegial to relocate an alligator in S.C. So does that mean that Charlie was euthanized? Just wondering...
