The waning days of summer are here, as fall is just around the corner. Still, when spending time outside, there is still much of the summer beauty awaiting. God supplies us with endless beauty this time of year. Between the fantastic sunsets, the trees filled with leaves and nuts, many flowers are still blooming and gardens are bountiful with vegetables.
Roses have done well this year. They have been almost unceasing with buds and gorgeous flowers. Surprise lilies, although they had a rough start in the spring, have popped up with their bare, leggy stems. The tops, however, are loaded with flowers--almost too heavy for the stems to bear. Tomato plants are loaded with little green tomatoes; with larger, ripe ones having already been harvested. Many more good tomatoes are still to come. Wildflowers are showing up all around--reminding us that we are not always in control. They find their way to some interesting places and display their wonder to us.
Beyond what springs up from the earth, butterflies, bees, wasps, and birds are all around. They flitter and fly, bringing joy to those in observance. To some, the bees and wasps may bring a little fear. If left alone, though, they are not worrisome. Squirrels are busy with their nut-gathering; sprinting across the yard from tree to tree. Cicadas, locusts, and June bugs are in abundance this year. Their sounds are heavy in the evening air.
Song of Songs 2:12-13 says, "The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the dove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines, in bloom, give forth fragrance," (The New American Bible, 1987, Wichita, KS: Devore & Sons, Inc.).
Before the time passes, take some time to enjoy what is outside. God provides us beauty in nature all around us. All it takes is a little time to stop and take notice. It is also a time to pray and thank God for His goodness. Find a few moments in each day to spend time with God and nature. It can make a tremendous difference in a person's life.
