Late singer Aaliyah to get Lifetime biopic treatment; Zendaya Coleman to star

Disney’s Zendaya Coleman will portray R&B star Aaliyah in a movie for the small screen. The Wrap reports Coleman has been tapped to play the late singer and actress who was tragically killed over ten years ago in a biopic for Lifetime.

The 17-year-old Coleman who also sings and acts stars in the Disney Channel television series “Shake It Up “. In addition to starring as the late songstress she will aso record a few of Aaliyah’s songs for the movie set to premiere in the fall.

Aaliyah who scored hits as a teen singing sensation also transitioned into acting before her untimely death. She starred in “Romeo Must Die” alongside action star Jet Li and “Queen of the Damned”.

She also contributed to the soundtracks for the movies “Doctor Dolittle”, her own film “Romeo Must Die” and the animated film “Anastasia” for the song “Journey to the Past” which was nominated for an Oscar.

Aaliyah who was born Aaliyah Dana Haughton died along with several members of her crew when the plane they were on went down shortly after takeoff following a music video shoot in 2001. She was 22.
