As the first month of the academic year draws to a close, the fall sports season at the University of Michigan progresses. Here is what the Wolverine women have been up to of late.
Cross Country went to West Lafayette, Indiana where they took first place in the Purdue Invitational. The other three teams in the meet were all fellow Big Ten schools-the host Boilermakers, the Illini of Illinois, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Michigan's Taylor Pogue was the top individual performer, while Brook Handler, Megan Weschler, and Erin Finn took the next three spots in the standings. Taylor Manett also made the top ten, placing sixth.
Field hockey bounced back from a 1-3 start, winning three consecutive games against Louisville, California-Davis, and William and Mary before losing a close one to #2 ranked Maryland. They are now even on the season at four wins and four losses. Rachael Mack scored the game's only goal in the win over #16 ranked Louisville, while goalie Haley Jones held the Cardinals scoreless.
The women's soccer team defeated Detroit, suffered their first loss of the season against Butler, then came back strong to beat Iowa in the Big Ten opener. They are now 7-1 on the 2013 season. Shelina Zadorsky and Nkem Ezurike scored the Michigan goals against Detroit, while Ezurike and Kayla Mannino put the ball in the net in the Iowa game. The Wolverine defense was strong, allowing only two goals in the three games.
Volleyball is now 10-1 on the season. They went to College Station, Texas where they defeated Siena and the host school, Texas A&M before losing a close match to #16 Florida State. Back at home, the Wolverines won the Michigan Invitational, taking down Marshall, Maryland, and #24 Ohio University. This coming weekend, the volleyballers face a tough test with Big Ten road matches against #13 Ohio State and #1 Penn State. Michigan is currently ranked #10 nationally, so they certainly are capable of beating both the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions.
