Late night Sacramento: Ethnic eats for midnight munchies

It is past 1 a.m. and the party is winding down, the bar is doing its last call or you are simply up late and need to satisfy a craving for good eats. Sacramento has many late night ethnic spots which offer more than the typical 24-hour diner. Whether you are craving something healthy or wish to indulge, the following places stay open past 1 a.m., are reasonably priced and give you a good reason to just sleep later.

Petra Greek, located at 1122 16th Street in downtown Sacramento, keeps its doors open until 3 a.m. from Wednesday through Saturday. The dolmades with Greek yogurt or the Three Souvlakia appetizer are a delicious and perfect choice if you want something light. For something more substantial, you can't go wrong with the Gyro Plate which includes your choice of gyro, side of salad, choice of fries or rice pilaf and tzatziki sauce or Greek yogurt to top it all off.

Pho Bac Hoa Viet at 1827 Broadway serves up traditional Vietnamese cuisine until 3 a.m. from Thursday through Saturday. Try the Che Ba Mau which is a tri-colored dessert of mung and red beans, colored agar strips, tapioca and topped with shaved ice and coconut milk. All varieties of pho are recommended here and considering that traditionally, pho is a breakfast food, eating this at 2 a.m. is legitimate. A warm bowl of this beef noodle soup is filled with the essence of anise star and spices, sliced flank steak and served with a dish of fresh herbs, jalapenos and lime which you add yourself. Don't forget to add the hoisin and Sriracha sauces.

Capitol Casino, due to its convenient location, 24-hour casino and ample parking is a popular spot for late night food seekers. From Thursday through Saturday, the American menu is served until 1 a.m. in the card room bar. The Asian menu, offered daily starting from 5 p.m. - 3:30 a.m., is expansive and has something for everyone. In general, anything ordered off this menu will be good, however crowd favorites tend to be the Spicy Peppered Pork, Garlic Peppered Shrimp and Won Ton Soup.

Kasbah Lounge at 2115 J Street features Middle Eastern fare in addition to a hookah bar and belly dancing. Kasbah late night hours, although generally open past midnight, may vary depending on the winter season and also restaurant capacity, so it is best to call ahead at (916) 442-4388 to check on the closing time. Recommended menu items are the Harissa Chili Chicken Wings and the Housemade Falafal Pita.

Adalberto's Mexican Restaurant has numerous locations around the greater Sacramento area, most of which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week with drive-thru windows available. The burritos and carne asada fries are definitely what draws the crowd here. Known for its great late night hours, don't be surprised to walk into a full house on any given night. The prices definitely cannot be beat with the large portions served here.
