On Saturday night, Stoughton police officers responded to a 200-person brawl at the Club Luis de Camoes on Porter Street, where a baby shower was being held.
An officer who was working at the club which according to WHDH, caters to the Portuguese community, called for backup around 11:40 p.m., after a fight between two men turned into an all-out riot, with bottles and chairs being thrown both inside and outside the building.
Stoughton police Sgt. Daniel McGowan, told the Boston Globe: "There were people fighting everywhere: men and women. The women had their shoes off and were pulling hair and throwing punches."
Officer Robert Devine, told the Stoughton Patch: "The behavior of the party-goers was despicable. We were more worried about the children there than their parents. The officers that responded could not have handled it any better than they did. It was supposed to be a baby shower. They should really be ashamed of themselves."
The situation was so unruly that it took a total of 20 officers an hour to restore order.
The Massachusetts State Police, the Norfolk County Sheriff's office, and police from Canton, Easton and Randolph also responded to the scene.
"We knew it was at the point where we needed additional help. We couldn't have gotten the situation under control without the help of these other departments who provided us with assistance," Devine added.
At one point, baby shower guests reportedly surrounded a group of police officers, hitting them with chairs, which prompted police to use their tasers on the crowd.
Four officers were injured in the melee.
In all, there were four adults and one juvenile arrested.
Those arrested were:
- Paulo Pires Depina, 24...charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault & battery on a police officer
- Aderito Lopes DeAndrade, 22...charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer
- Patrick Cardoso Lopes, 24...charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, obstruction of justice, and witness intimidation.
- A 14 year old juvenile from Brockton was also charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer.
All of the adult defendants are due for formal arraignment in Stoughton District Court on Monday.
