As a result it was no surprise that a Brisbane lapse gave Adelaide their first opportunity as Jeronimo ran past Shane Steffanuto, which forced Michael Theo to slide in and he brought down Jeronimo for a penalty, getting away with a yellow card which could have easily been a different color.
Michael Theo came up big on the penalty and saved Jeronimo's effort with his legs only for the Argentine to respond quickly and get to the rebound to tap home the opening goal.
Theo continued to work hard and was vital in stopping Steven Lustica setting up another opportunity as he rushed out to get the ball clear.
Late in the half Brisbane had a solid chance, coming through Thomas Broich as he was set up by Henrique only for Broich to shoot wide.
In the 40th minute Brisbane's chances took a severe hit as Fabio Ferreira was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Michael Zullo putting Adelaide a man up as well as a goal up at half time.
Adelaide really controlled the match in the second half, with an extra man, they held the ball for large periods of the second half but couldn't make that possession dominance count.
Brisbane Roar brought on Besarat Berisha as the second half wore on in an effort to get some control back and that lead to Brisbane starting to see more of the ball.
In the 80th minute that change paid off, as Berisha was able to finish off some neat passing from Broich and Matt McKay to seemingly salvage a point for the Roar.
Brisbane looked to push for a win, and that allowed Adelaide to exploit the space presented which saw Zullo send in a cross for Jordan Elsey who headed home the winner in the 92nd minute.
