Offical tournament of USA Boxing
Day 1 Finals
Welterweight class: Dillon Cook vs Alemeo Carter
The welterweight (152 lbs) class featured a rematch of the Kansas City Golden Gloves Regional tournament from last week between Dillon Cook of Seneca boxing club from Seneca, Missouri and Alemeo Carter of Pound 4 Pound from Overland Park, Kansas.
This bout was redemption for Dillon Cook as he was able to win a decision over the boxer who defeated him for the Kansas City Golden Gloves Regional welterweight title the weekend before.
Dillon prepared himself for this match up as he adjusted his style specifically for Alemeo's quick strikes. Dillon was successful making Alemeo miss and prevented a lot of clean shots but the same could be said for Alemo who is never an easy target to hit.
Dillon seemed to be more effective when he would throw a flurry of punches even though Alemeo is slick enough to avoid most of them.
Alemeo didn't show much attacks until the third round. Most of the attacks were quick two punch combos followed by a delay third punch. Alemeo's style prefers an aggressive style like how Dillon boxed in their last meet when Alemeo was able frustrate him and picked him off with effective scoring punches.
3rd Round of Dillon Cook vs Alemeo Carter (Wichita Boxing on YouTube)
This time Dillon exercised a lot of patience as he waited for an opening which is seldom against a mover like Alemeo.
This was a difficult bout to call as any other bout would go by the number of shots landed. This win would have gone to Dillon for style and effort. Effort meaning Dillon initiated most of the exchanges and he threw a lot more punches.
This win advances Dillon to the Heartland Regional to take place in Oklahoma for the men's division.

The light heavyweight (178 lbs) class matched Olijuwan Jones of Turner Golden Gloves from Kansas City, Kansas against our local upcoming boxer Aaron Young of Bad Dog Boxing club.
Olijuwan won the Kansas City Golden Gloves Regional light heavyweight title last week in an impressive one-sided win. Aaron was the runner up in this year's Kansas-Oklahoma Golden Gloves Regional tournament in a loss to Bo Gibbs, Jr. of Wetumke, Oklahoma.
This is bout was Aaron's personal growth point in his amateur boxing career as he proved himself that he can box with the best of them. He banged with Olijuwan and took the fight to him rather than running around the ring.
This is the Aaron I haven't seen before and I like him! Grant it Aaron was outscored on the punches as Olijuwan landed the more effective combination punches to win by decision. What the result doesn't show is that Aaron made this a difficult bout for Olijuwan and it was confirmed with Olijuwan's respect for him at the end of the bout. Respect from a skilled boxer like Olijuwan may mean more than a win to an upcoming boxer like Aaron as it serves to be a huge confidence booster.
3rd Round of Olijuwan Jones vs Aaron Young (Wichita Boxing on YouTube)
Olijuwan has heavy hands and he may have wanted to take the opportunity to use more of his hand speed rather than his punching power.
It seemed Olijuwan was a little surpised that Aaron was able to take on some hard punches and come back with some of his own.
Olijuwan is a strong boxer and it looked like he may have power punched himself tired by the third round.
As Olijuwan advances to the regional tournament in Oklahoma he may want to utilize his hand speed and allow the power to come out on its own rather than making it happen.
Olijuwan has shown that he can put together great combination punches with his hand speed; the challenge may be for him to control his urge to knock out his opponents. He may at least want to wait in the third round when he's ahead in the bout! Olijuwan advances to the Heartland regional tournament for the light heavyweight class. he super heavyweight (201+ lbs) class matched Lenroy 'Cam' Thompson of Turner Golden Gloves from Kansas City, Kansas against Alejandro Mejia of Arkansas City, Kansas. Cam is currently ranked fifth in the nation by USA Boxing and he is the 2-time Kansas City Golden Gloves Regional super heavyweight champion.
1st Round of Lenroy Cam Thompson vs Alejandro Mejia (Wichita Boxing)
Cam was thankful to finally have someone in the ring against him for a boxing workout before he heads over to the regional tournament. Many boxing fans were hoping to see Cam matched with our local super heavyweight Golden Glove champ Jeff Page.
Word is that Jeff Page fought through a back pain incurred from football in the Kansas-Oklahoma Regional Golden Gloves tournament last month. Jeff is a linebacker on a football scholarship for Butler County Community College of El Dorado, Kansas. As Jeff is trying to rest his back for the National Golden Gloves tournament early next month, Alejandro Mejia of Arkansas City took up the challenge.
Alejandro was understandably outclassed by this 100+ amateur bout boxer but Cam rightfully, didn't take this opportunity to showcase his knockout power but rather to get a good boxing workout. Cam moved around the ring more than he had to and let up on his punches but landed enough to ensure he kept a strong lead over his opponent. Like many other super heavyweights in the ring against Cam, Alejandro had a hard time timing and placing his punches on this versatile boxer.
Cam showed great sportsmanship and Alejandro gained a great deal of experience challenging the #5 ranked boxer in the nation by USA Boxing. Cam advances to the Heartland Regional tournament next month for the super heavyweight class. (View the videos of the bout by clicking on the rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and Decision)
