With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, romance is on the menu. And a romantic weekend getaway may be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the holiday. Add in the fact that Monday is President’s Day, and you’ve got a potential three-or-four-day weekend.
However, the fact that President’s Day and Valentine’s Day fall on the same weekend may not be the best scenario for last-minute bargain hunters. The extra day off combined with the inherent desire to travel for Valentine’s Day means that flight and hotel prices this weekend have skyrocketed, even for short-haul flights. In fact, flights from LAX to Reno/Lake Tahoe from February 14-17 start at $442 on Southwest and $599 on United for the brief flight to Nevada.
Although the getaway may be expensive, there are still plenty of options for those procrastinating or impulse travelers yearning to get away from it all with their sweetheart. Below are some ideas for this weekend and beyond into winter and spring.
San Diego: US Grant Hotel’s “Lesson in Love” Package
Just a short drive from LA is nice retreat in San Diego, which does not require a hefty plane ticket fare. And the perfect option of travelers over President’s Day weekend is the U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. This Luxury Collection hotel was built by Ulysses S. Grant Jr. in honor of his father, the 18th United States President (hence the name U.S. Grant). The hotel is offering the “A Lesson in Love” Package, which includes a one-hour massage class that teaches couples basic at home massage techniques, and a couple’s spa gift of massage oil, bath salts, and aromatherapy candle. The package must be booked at least four days in advance and is available until February 28.
Sedona Arizona: Red Rock Country Meets the Spa
For couples looking to take in gorgeous scenery and fantastic spas, Sedona may be a memorable option. In the heart of red rock country, Sedona offers various resorts with fantastic spas. One such resort would be L’Auberge de Sedona, a highly regarded resort that is ranked number three for hotels in Sedona on Trip Advisor. While limited rooms are still available this weekend, there are various packages available including the Armour Package and Spa Packages, along with the renowned Pink Jeep Tour Packages for the more adventurous at heart. And remember, the Grand Canyon is only a two-hour drive from Sedona if you want to make the most of your getaway. Rooms and spa appointments in the entire Sedona area are going fast, with some hotels already being fully committed, so book quickly.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
For those looking to get some tropical sun (and perhaps escape the polar vortex), Puerto Rico offers a unique and authentic Spanish charm and beaches galore without a passport. The San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is option offering various packages, as well as the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino. Although certain packages may be sold out for this weekend, many are available throughout the month and into the spring.
Ski Country and Fresh Snow
For all those cold-weather (and Winter Olympic) buffs, a ski getaway is a clear option, with much of the country being hammered with snow. Some typical locations like Denver and Lake Tahoe come to mind, and according to snocountry.com, a big snow is on the way to regions in the Northern Rocky Mountains. As previously mentioned, rates to Lake Tahoe via Reno are expensive this weekend, so shop quickly and wisely.
Paris: Eternal City of Love
International jetsetters with more time for a longer vacation and those who may want to travel later this month, can visit romantic Paris for a French vacation. And today, Travelzoo sent out a VIP Newsflash that Air Tahiti Nui is offering a three-day sale with nonstop tickets from Los Angeles to Paris being offered as low as $890 for select dates through March. Inventory is limited and the sale ends Thursday.
